Tanzania: Film Industry Ordered to Desist Moral Decay

Dodoma — A MEMBER of Parliament has called for government's intervention against local films and music videos which were acting as agents of moral decay by significantly displaying violent and sexual acts against women.
During the questions and answers session, nominated Member of Parliament James Mbatia (NCCR), said some arts like local films and music videos show violence against women, abuse and dressing them in skimpy wear as a way of attracting more business.
"These acts of using women as the biggest 'salespersons' in a manner that humiliates them is against our moral fabric. The dignity of our women should not be abused like this as we see in many of our films and local music videos today," he said Mbatia, in turn, wanted to know what the government was doing to arrest such a development that uses women as objects.
Responding, the Deputy Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Amos Makalla, asked film makers to follow their legal obligation to hand in their films to the film board for review before they enter the market, against which Makalla warned, they can be held accountable.
He also said the government has been at the forefront to speak and act against the issue of moral decay that aims at dihumanising a woman like violence against them, abuse and dressing them in skimpy wear.
Some of the actions the government had taken, he said, included advising and rejecting films that seem to go against acceptable moral practices in the country and those that go against the film laws. This, he said, also included films that seem to dehumanize a woman and denying her of her dignity.
"Some films were brought for checking before release and we had to reject them until changes were made to those areas that had immoral scenes," he said. He said that the Ministry, through the film board, is ongoing with its strict stance and educating people in that industry through media so that they follow existing laws and regulations to advance the industry in the right way acceptable to all.
Makalla said the government had started a programme to formalise the music and film industry, which it hoped would return discipline and expand scope of management, control and following the law. He said the government continues to ask film makers not to make or engage in those acts that exude moral decadence.
But Mbatia decried the ongoing trend of many films exuding sex acts as a fashionable thing, thus sending wrong messages to communities that watch such films. "Why should films be about sex and not messages that build a moral fabric among Tanzanians?
Even as some film makers are doing a good job, majority of the films, it is said, are centred around such topics that do not build our communities," he said. The MP appealed to film makers to ask themselves why they have not been able to do to stop the moral decay and the rot in the industry.
"We shall be trapped and we have to seek an intervention through the government monitoring these films and videos before they enter the local market. It all starts from these videos," he said.

George Jones, American country singer, dies aged 81

George Jones speaking in September 2009 and performing his signature song, He Stopped Loving Her Today

US country singer George Jones, who had a string of number one songs between the 1950s and 1990s, has died aged 81.
Jones' publicist, Kirt Webster, said the Grammy-winning singer was admitted to hospital for fever and irregular blood pressure and died on Friday.
Nicknamed Possum, his signature song was He Stopped Loving Her Today, a track about love and death.
He was married to Tammy Wynette between 1969 and 1975 and the pair recorded several songs together in the 1970s.
Born in Texas on 12 September 1931, Jones played guitar for tips on the streets of Beaumont as a teenager before going on to serve in the US Marine Corps.
He returned to Texas to record for the Starday label in Houston, achieving his first top ten hit in 1955 with Why Baby Why.
Known for his precise baritone and evocative voice, Jones' first number one song, White Lightning, came in 1959, followed by Tender Years in 1961.
Country star Garth Brooks paid tribute to the singer saying: "The greatest voice to ever grace country music will never die. Jones has a place in every heart that ever loved any kind of music."

Cocaine addiction Jones had a string of top 10 songs during the 1960s and 1970s including If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me (Her Memory Will), Window Up Above, She Thinks I Still Care, Good Year for the Roses, The Race Is On.
But his battle with alcoholism and cocaine addiction frequently derailed his career and at one point his reputation for cancelling performances earned him the nickname No-Show Jones.
Having divorced his second wife in 1968, Jones married Wynette a year later. The pairing was an enormous professional success for both as they recorded and toured together, recording several tracks including We're Gonna Hold On, Golden Ring and Near You.
However as Jones' addiction problem worsened, so too did his marriage to Wynette, who later claimed he once came at her with a gun.

They divorced in 1975 but later resumed recording together. The couple's only daughter, Tamala is also a country singer under the name Georgette Jones.
Jones recorded the track He Stopped Loving Her Today in 1980. The song, which he said was his favourite, revived a flagging career and won him the Country Music Award's top male vocalist award in 1980 and 1981. He also earned a Grammy for best male country vocal performance.
Paying tribute to the singer on Twitter, Keith Urban said: "‏If I'm blessed enough to make it there, I look forward to you giving me the grand tour. Rest in peace George Jones!!!!!"
Singer Faith Hill wrote: "We lost one of the best voices God created this morning. Our hearts are saddened to hear that George Jones has passed away... Our thoughts and prayers are with Nancy and all of the family."
Jones credited his fourth wife Nancy, whom he married in 1983, with helping him clean up. But in 1999 he was seriously injured after driving drunk and crashing into a bridge, leading to another period of rehabilitation.
Jones was in the middle of a US tour when he was taken into hospital. At the tour's final date in Nashville in November, he was due to be joined by an array of country music stars including Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, Garth Brook and rapper Kid Rock.

When was the last time you saw a full 32 piece orchestra at the Grammys - now that's JT style.

Justin Timberlake made his return to the Grammy Awards stage last night (February 10), binging a 15-piece band and a full orchestra to perform his comeback single Suit & Tie.
Backed by his Tennessee Kids band, Justin sang in his incomparable falsetto, shimmied across the stage like an old school pop idol, giving Suit & Tie a Rat Pack feel by calling Jay-Z out of the audience for the rapper's verse.

Whether in black and white or colour, JT brought down the house and also gave fans a glimpse of what to expect from his third solo LP The 20/20 Experience by singing new track Pusher Love Girl.

Taylor Swift also put on an impressive display surrounded by aerialists, ballerinas, fire dancers and a stage full of circus performers as she acted as the ringleader to open the ceremony in grand style, by mixing a surreal circus with a bit of Alice in Wonderland magic.

Dressed all in while, Swift made sure to pull out all the stops to help get the night off the launch pad. Her mind-bending performance of We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together featured a wayward lover strapped to a spinning wheel.

During her performance, the 23-year old joked: "So, he calls me and says, 'I still love you.' And I'm like, 'I'm sorry, I'm busy opening up the Grammys and we are never, ever getting back together. Like ever'."

Other stand out performances on the night included Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Sting and Damian Marley's tribute to reggae icon Bob Marley, which left everyone from Pharrell to Nicole Kidman bopping their heads in the audience.

Carrie Underwood may have had that cool CGI dress, but Frank Ocean really burned out optic nerves with a trippy performance that made it look like he was running to stand still.

Wearing his signature headband, Frank stood behind a waist-high keyboard surrounded by a white screen for a meditative Forrest Gump.

While a movie of his churning legs running down a secluded desert highway screened below his torso, Ocean crooned the meditative tune flawlessly. Plus, he threw in a sweet whistling solo as he turned to leave the stage.

The likes of Maroon 5 and Alicia Keys, fun., Kelly Clarkson, The Black Keys, Mumford & Sons, Elton John and Ed Sheeran performed on the night, with RiRi also delivering a moving rendition of her current single, Stay.

Singer goes unapologetically simple for her latest video, where she's joined by collaborator Mikky Ekko.

Rihanna Strips Down To Just Her Emotions In 'Stay' Video'Not since Britney Spears went for a dip in her "Everytime" video has a pop star's bath time made for such an unforgettable music video. While Spears' video is driven by a storyline, not much happens in Rihanna's clip for "Stay," but plenty is said.

The solemn, simple visual reflects the equally solemn ballad, showing the Grammy winner strip down and crawl into the tub, where she spends the entire clip. The water covers her body, but the shadow of her figure underneath the milky blue water leaves very little to the imagination.

When the video isn't focused on Rihanna's heartbreak, it cuts to Mikky Ekko, the singer/songwriter who appears on the track with her. They are never together in the visual, but instead call and answer each other's longing calls.

"Stay" is Rihanna's follow-up to "Diamonds," but where "Diamonds" (directed by Anthony Mandler) focused on quick, dramatic shots to weave together its story, "Stay" is all about lingering moments. The final image is of Rihanna's face, her eyes closed, just soaking it all in.

The clip was directed by Sophie Muller, marking the legendary director's first collaboration with the singer. Muller has previously directed unforgettable clips for No Doubt, Beyoncé, Pink and Annie Lennox, among others. This is not the first time fans have seen Rih Rih and Ekko together. Rihanna was joined by Ekko on Sunday night at the Grammy Awards, where they performed the song together in an equally simple performance.

In addition to the official video, Rihanna also dropped an "uncut" version of the raw video. In it, Ekko never makes an appearance but instead it is just footage of the pop star alone in the tub.

What did you think of Rihanna's "Stay" video?

Justin talked to Ryan Seacrest‘s radio show about the album cover meaning:

“It more or less came out of I was playing some of the stuff for my friends and they would come in and out of the studio and I’d say, ‘What do you think of this?’ And my best friend said, ‘This is music that you can see,’ and for some reason that stuck with me,” Justin said.

Juelz Santana Sentenced To Two Years Probation Over Death Threats

Skull Gang founder makes plea agreement.

Juelz Santana was sentenced to two years probation on Friday (January 25), stemming from an incident where he allegedly threatened a neighbor with death after they tried to intervene when the Harlem rapper was reportedly assaulting his girlfriend.
According to the Cliff View Pilot, the matter began when the unnamed neighbor witnessed Julez hitting his girlfriend outside of his Englewood, New Jersey home. The neighbor called the police, and says since then he has received serious threats of bodily harm from the rapper. The neighbor insists the incident has caused “problems in my marriage [and] my personal life. … I had to move out of fear. I pay more rent now. I’ve been having problems with my wife.”
Juelz escaped a possible prison sentence by entering a plea deal to lesser charges. Santana pleaded guilty to a single third-degree count of threatening the neighbor. According to Superior Court Judge James Guida, “Probation would be a positive factor for the defendant, and incarceration an excessive hardship.”
Juelz’s hiatus ending mixtape God Will’n put him back on the music scene, but there are still other legal matters he must tend to. Santana still faces charges from a 2011 raid on his “Santana’s World” studio where authorities uncovered guns, ammunition and marijuana.

Shakira and Gerard Piqué have welcomed a new addition to their family: Son Milan Piqué Mebarak was born Tuesday (January 22), the Latin singer and her soccer-star boyfriend announced on Shakira's website.

"We are happy to announce the birth of Milan Piqué Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Piqué, born January 22nd at 9:36pm, in Barcelona, Spain," the announcement reads. "The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification. Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth."

According to the announcement, baby Milan weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces, and both mother and child "are in excellent health." Milan is the first child for Shakira and Piqué.

Those wishing to send the happy family their support may do so via the couple's online charity baby shower, which they set up through UNICEF to benefit underprivileged babies.

"Every couple that's expecting a baby shares our same dreams and hopes for their children," said Shakira, who is a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, when they launched the virtual baby shower. "However, many don't have the same opportunities we do to give them a happy childhood free of preventable and easily cured illnesses. Together we can change that."

Jay-Z and Beyonce Reportedly Spend $200,000 on Blue Ivy’s First Birthday

Wow.

Jay-Z and Beyonce did not hold back when it came to their daughter’s first birthday. The powerful couple reportedly spent more than $200,000 in the expensive birthday bash that was held in New York.
Blue Ivy was treated to a princess-themed party where she received a diamond-encrusted Barbie worth $80,000, plus other accessory and toys. To top it all off, the adults who attended got goodie bags that included concert tickets and personalized gold pens with Blue Ivy written on them.
Needless to the say, Bey-Z wanted to make Blue Ivy’s birthday very special. We guess the Barbie will sit nicely next to the Banksy and Basquiat paintings in her room.

It's one thing to sing "Phresh Out The Runway." It's another thing to LIVE these words, which is exactly what Rihanna did last night on The Voice. The pop star kicked off the finale episode of the singing competition in a huge way, performing "Diamonds" in a Lanvin ensemble that is, literally, straight from the catwalk. We first spotted the sequined tuxedo jumpsuit back in September when Kristen McMenamy modeled it in Alber Elbaz's Paris show, and now Rihanna has bragging rights as the first celeb to wear it IRL. And while Rih's no stranger to sporting her fair share of designer goods, it's rare when she copies a look almost ENTIRELY...all the way down to the accessories.
The singer paired her sleeveless black jumpsuit- which is embellished with Swarovski crystallized embroidery, we might add- with the same platform bronze Lanvin sandals that paraded down the catwalk a few months ago. Rihanna kept the jewelry practically the same as well, rocking an identical crystal belt, crystal bracelet and crystal necklace (sans statement choker). But her shine didn't stop with the fashion. Keeping with the "Diamonds" theme of the night, RiRi finished the look with Minx metallic nail wraps... giving a whole new meaning to the term "golden girl."

Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, And More Are Best Dressed At 2013 Golden Globe Awards

With so many winter awards shows running, it's hard to stand out from the crowd. While we'll always have a soft spot for that little music event in February, the Golden Globe Awards are absolutely one of our favorite shows because the worlds of film and television merge for one magical night of sartorial one-upping. From silver screen starlets like Anne Hathaway to small screen sweethearts like Sarah Hyland and even soundtrack songstresses like Taylor Swift, the PYTs turned it out for the Globes step-and-repeat, and while it was a lofty task, we've whittled it all down into our list of the top 10 best dressed ladies of the night.
ANNE HATHAWAY IN CHANEL COUTURE

The lovely, doe-eyed Anne Hathaway shone bright in winter white Chanel couture. The dress, surprisingly resurfaced from the label's Spring 2009 archives, featured a sleek strapless neckline cutting straight across the chest and the look of being two pieces. The Les Miserables star won big tonight not only for her award as "Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture," but also with her strikingly simple column dress.
JENNIFER LAWRENCE IN CHRISTIAN DIOR COUTURE

Jennifer Lawrence garnered "Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy" accolades for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, but we think the Globe winner deserves equal praise for her exemplary red carpet steez. Our girl J.Law is on fire in this Christian Dior fall/winter 2012 haute couture gown from its itsy bitsy tapered bustier (which BTW she looks positively sewn into — ZOMG exemplary fit) all the way down to its super voluminous satin ballroom skirt.
TAYLOR SWIFT IN DONNA KARAN ATELIER
Taylor Swift

Also working the satin, Taylor Swift turned quite a few heads in this dark plum Donna Karan Atelier number. Heading in the opposite direction of her plunging People's Choice Awards look, Taylor hit the Golden Globes red carpet in a high racer neck and BIG trumpeted train. Demure in the front, the dress was assuredly NOT one-note with a great open back and a flirty strip of peekaboo sheer down the sides of skirt. Very unexpected and a nice change of pace for Swift.
AMANDA SEYFRIED IN GIVENCHY
Amanda Seyfried

Much like her Les Miserables co-star Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried went the winter white route for the show. We love the intricate paneling and construction of the custom lace Givenchy gown and have the MOST hair envy for her cascading flaxen waves which are the perfect balance of soft and shiny.
EMILY BLUNT IN MICHAEL KORS
Emily Blunt

YOWZA. Emily Blunt and her mustard Michael Kors earn a spot on this list because THIS is how a lady makes cut-outs look regal. Because the Salmon Fishing in the Yemen actress has styled this gown with a simple, polished updo, magenta costume jewelry earrings that are bigger than your eyeballs, and smoldering but still natural makeup (also, since the dress is lace and a color close to Blunt's skintone), the cut-outs look elegant and chic and not anything like clubwear which is a feat much harder than she's making it look.
JENNIFER LOPEZ IN ZUHAIR MURAD
Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez springs for her go-to Zuhair Murad to dress her for this year's Golden Globes. The Beirut-based designer outfitted J.Lo with several custom get-ups for her summer tour wardrobe, all with fake-out bases to match her skin and topped with intricate and strategically placed embellishments. This gown was no exception with symmetrical, sprawling Byzantine patterns from Jenny's clavicle to her pooling train.
KELLY OSBOURNE IN ZAC POSEN
Kelly Osbourne

We've said it before and we'll say it again: Kelly Osbourne is absolutely slaying the red carpet these days, lilac locks and all. Just like last year, Miss Kelly O. turned to her good friend Zac Posen for this oyster-colored gown, and needless to say, he delivered. We can't decide which part of the dress we like the best: the subtle ruffles across the sweetheart neckline, the body-hugging fit, or the exaggerating skirt. Forget playing favorites, we love it ALL.
SARAH HYLAND IN MAX AZRIA ATELIER

Dear Sarah Hyland, could you BE any cuter? (actually, don't answer that...) The Modern Family actress and our newest fashion crush nailed several trends at once tonight in her Max Azria Atelier gown, working that black satin peplum top and flowing skirt to total perfection. She's also got the Old Hollywood beauty game on lock, with enviable dark honey waves and a statement berry lip. Go, Sarah!
NICOLE RICHIE IN NAEEM KHAN

Speaking of fashion crushes, Nicole Richie brought back her OG bohemian chic look tonight, this time with a modern twist. She stepped out in a Naeem Khan long-sleeved gown with allover blue embellishment, and carried a fringe leather clutch from her own House of Harlow label. She might also have glamazon waves like Sarah, Amanda, and Kelly, but Nicole's pale blue eyeshadow truly sets her beauty look apart from the rest of the pack. This powder blue makeup doesn't even look '80s, which, trust us, is WAY easier said than done.
ZOSIA MAMET IN TONY WARD COUTURE
Zosia Mamet

Photo: Getty ImagesThe ladies from Girls won big tonight- they snatched up the trophy for "Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy"- but it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that they dominated the red carpet scene, as well. Zosia Mamet stayed true to her cooly off-kilter style in a black leather paneled dress from Tony Ward Couture. We love the shoulder detailing, the minimal accessories, and the nude lip— a far cry from Soshanna's pink tracksuits, that's for sure.

Justin Timberlake Drops 'Suit & Tie (Featuring Jay-Z)' Style Anthem

Justin Timberlake
We interrupt this Golden Globes coverage for a very important announcement: Justin Timberlake has dropped his first new solo music since FutureSex/LoveSounds! JT just released a new track from his forthcoming The 20/20 Experience with a guest verse from Jay-Z, and it's called *drumrolllll* "Suit & Tie." Take a close look at the lyrics and this isn't just an upbeat love song but a polished, pressed style anthem. This is exciting because it makes real all our hopes and dreams of Justin bringing sexy back. Sealing the fate for these bizarro, whackadoo accessories, never to return again.
JT coos on the open, "I be on my suit and tie s***, tie s***, tie s***," before dropping into the hook. "As long as I got on my suit and tie, I'ma leave it all on the floor tonight / And you got fixed up to the nines, let me show you a few things," he sings while we imagine him two-stepping, dipping mic stands and picking them back up with a quick switch of his foot, "All pressed up in black and white, and you're dressed in that dress I like / Love is swingin' in the air tonight, let me show you a few things." The whole black and white, suit and tie thing reminds us of wedding receptions more than any Saturday nights we're used to which (obviously) reminds us that Jessica Biel is the luckiest girl ever.
Jay-Z (another married man — all hail Queen Bey) comes in, playing off the black-and-white theme, "All black at the white shows / White shoes at the black shows," but it's the end of his appearance that gives us the juiciest fashion lyrics of the spot. After our favorite line, "Time for tuxedos for no reason," Jay goes in on brands and specific garment pairings, painting (perhaps unintentionally) a picture of Soho, New York, "AllSaints for my angel / Alexander Wang, too / A**-tight denim and some Dunks / I show you how to do this, Young, uh."
On top of all that, this song also gives us the perfect excuse to take a nice, long look back at Timberlake's dressed-up looks through the years. Submitted for the approval of the midnight society (of humans surfing the web at these press time twilight hours), here are, like, a bajillion pictures of Justin in suits and ties!
